Our son had a very complex mouth- he spent nearly 3 years in braces, but the care he received at VanLaecken Orthodontics was incredible. From the facilities to the front desk, assistants, and doctors, we could have not asked for better care.
Emily S.
Great experience. Highly recommend VanLaecken for orthodontic needs. My daughter began her journey on March 13, 2024. She got her braces off on June 10, 2026. An amazing transformation!! Thank you so much to everyone at VanLaecken!!

I receive orthodontic care at the Aberdeen clinic. Every single team member that I have interacted with over the past 2+ years has always treated me with respect and kindness. The team does their very best to accommodate the needs of each patient that walks through their doors. Dr. Ryan is friendly, knowledgeable and takes the time to listen to any concerns that I might have. My daughter has also received services with this team. She had a very positive experience as well. I have nothing but praise for the Van Laecken team.
Kirsten G.
Great staff, very friendly. High level of care for their patients. My oldest daughter has had a great experience throughout her Ortho journey and I will be happy to have my 2 other children come to Vanlaecken for their journey if needed.
Alexandra M.
The doctors and staff are so kind. The appointment are quick and easy to schedule. Definitely recommend!
lussi N.
I was denied braces since I was a child. Being told by multiple different places that I needed all types of procedures ( and I did them all) just to still be denied. I have always been insecure about my smile. I remember coming here and thinking they are going to deny me ( cause I originally wanted another treatment) or tell me to get more procedures. I am 22 and have been fighting for my smile for 12 years. My first appointment was a screening. My second - I got my braces. My life has been changed and my Smile now exceeds the one I dreamt of. I couldn’t imagine a better team taking care of me. Thank you.
Kelsey F.
We've had a great experience with VanLaecken Ortho so far. Everyone we've worked with has been so friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. They're very timely and organized, and appointments have gone smoothly, excited to see the final results and bring our other kids here, too!

Frequently Asked Questions
How do orthodontic elastics work?
Orthodontic elastics work by applying gentle pressure to move teeth into the desired position. They help align the bite, close gaps, and correct jaw alignment. Elastics are customized for each patient's treatment plan and are crucial for achieving optimal results in orthodontic treatment.
Who invented orthodontics?
The concept of orthodontics dates back to ancient times, with the Etruscans using appliances to straighten teeth around 700 BC. However, the modern field of orthodontics was pioneered by Pierre Fauchard, a French dentist often referred to as the "father of modern dentistry," in the 18th century.
How do orthodontic expanders work?
Orthodontic expanders work by applying gentle pressure to the upper jaw, gradually widening it to correct issues like crowding or a narrow palate. This process creates space for teeth to align properly, improving bite and overall oral health. Regular adjustments ensure the expansion is controlled and effective.
What does orthodontics cover?
Orthodontics covers a range of treatments such as braces, Invisalign, dental monitoring, TMJ/TMD treatment, laser gum treatment, and more. These treatments aim to straighten teeth, correct bites, improve oral health, and enhance smiles for patients of all ages. Orthodontists provide personalized care to achieve optimal results.
When is orthodontics medically necessary?
Orthodontics is medically necessary when it addresses issues like misaligned teeth, jaw problems, or difficulty chewing. Conditions such as overbites, underbites, and crowded teeth can impact oral health, speech, and overall well-being, warranting orthodontic treatment for functional and aesthetic reasons.
When braces are removed, is orthodontic treatment over?
Orthodontic treatment isn't over when braces are removed. Retainers are essential to maintain the results achieved during treatment. They help prevent teeth from shifting back to their original position. Regular follow-up appointments are also necessary to monitor progress and ensure long-term success.
Who invented orthodontic braces?
Orthodontic braces were invented by Pierre Fauchard, a French dentist often referred to as the "father of modern dentistry." Fauchard's work laid the foundation for orthodontics as we know it today, revolutionizing dental care and treatment methods.
Who discovered orthodontics?
Orthodontics, as a specialized field of dentistry, was discovered by Pierre Fauchard, a French dentist often referred to as the "father of modern dentistry." Fauchard's work in the 18th century laid the foundation for orthodontics as we know it today, focusing on correcting teeth alignment and jaw irregularities.
How do orthodontists take off expanders?
Orthodontists typically remove expanders by using a special key to turn a small screw in the expander. This process gradually loosens the expander until it can be easily taken out. The removal is quick and painless, and the orthodontist will ensure the patient is comfortable throughout the procedure.
How to learn orthodontics?
Learning orthodontics involves completing dental school, followed by specialized orthodontic training. Consider these steps: 1. Earn a dental degree (DDS or DMD). 2. Complete an orthodontic residency program. 3. Obtain certification from the American Board of Orthodontics. 4. Stay updated with continuing education in orthodontics.
Does orthodontics include implants?
Orthodontics typically does not include implants. Orthodontic treatment focuses on aligning teeth and jaws using braces, aligners, and other appliances. Implants are usually placed by oral surgeons or periodontists to replace missing teeth. However, in some cases, orthodontic treatment may be part of a comprehensive plan that includes implants for a complete smile restoration.
How do orthodontists fix loose brackets?
Orthodontists fix loose brackets by applying dental adhesive to reattach them to the teeth. Patients should avoid eating hard or sticky foods to prevent further loosening. Contact the orthodontist for a repair appointment promptly.
Why is orthodontics important?
Orthodontics is crucial for correcting misaligned teeth, improving oral health, enhancing aesthetics, and boosting self-confidence. Proper alignment can prevent issues like gum disease, tooth decay, and jaw pain. Treatment options like braces and Invisalign cater to all age groups, ensuring a healthy, beautiful smile for a lifetime.
How do I find the right orthodontist?
Finding the right orthodontist involves researching their credentials, experience, and patient reviews. Consider their specialization in treatments like Invisalign, braces, or other orthodontic services. Schedule a consultation to assess their communication style, treatment options, and office environment. Trust your instincts and choose an orthodontist who makes you feel comfortable and confident in your smile transformation.
When were orthodontic braces first used?
Orthodontic braces were first used in the early 19th century, with the first modern braces being developed in the early 20th century by Edward Angle. These braces have since evolved significantly in terms of materials, design, and effectiveness in straightening teeth and correcting bites.
What is Class II orthodontics?
Class II orthodontics is a type of treatment that focuses on correcting an overbite, where the upper teeth significantly overlap the lower teeth. This condition, also known as retrognathism, is addressed using various orthodontic appliances like braces or aligners to bring the upper and lower jaws into proper alignment.
Why is orthodontics so expensive?
Orthodontic treatment costs reflect the specialized skills, materials, and technology involved. Expenses cover personalized treatment plans, high-quality materials, advanced equipment, and ongoing care. Additionally, orthodontists undergo extensive training and certification. The cost also includes follow-up appointments, adjustments, and any necessary appliances or treatments.
How can malocclusion be corrected?
Malocclusion can be corrected through orthodontic treatments like braces or Invisalign. These methods apply gentle pressure to move teeth into proper alignment, improving bite and overall oral health. In severe cases, surgical intervention may be necessary to correct jaw misalignment. Regular orthodontic visits ensure progress and adjustments for optimal results.
What are the latest orthodontic treatment options?
The latest orthodontic treatment options include braces, Invisalign for kids, teens, and adults, dental monitoring, laser gum treatment, and TMJ/TMD treatment. These treatments offer comfort, aesthetics, and customization to meet individual needs, ensuring beautiful, confident smiles.
How long does orthodontic treatment typically last?
Orthodontic treatment typically lasts between 18 to 24 months, but the duration can vary based on individual needs and treatment complexity. Factors like age, treatment goals, and compliance can influence the length of treatment. Regular appointments and following orthodontist recommendations help achieve optimal results efficiently.
Can orthodontic care improve jaw alignment issues?
Orthodontic care can improve jaw alignment issues through treatments like braces, Invisalign, and TMJ/TMD therapy. These options help correct misalignments, improve bite function, and alleviate discomfort associated with jaw issues. Consulting with an orthodontist can determine the best course of action for addressing jaw alignment problems effectively.
Are there age limits for orthodontic treatment?
Orthodontic treatment is not limited by age; it can benefit individuals of all ages. Children, teens, and adults can all undergo orthodontic treatment to achieve a straighter smile and improved oral health. Consult with an orthodontist to determine the best treatment plan tailored to your specific needs.
What types of braces offer the fastest results?
Invisalign and clear aligners are popular options for fast results in orthodontic treatment. These advanced aligners provide efficient teeth straightening with fewer office visits compared to traditional braces. They are comfortable, aesthetic, and customized to meet individual needs, making them a top choice for quick and effective orthodontic results.
How do orthodontists address overcrowded teeth?
Orthodontists address overcrowded teeth by using braces or clear aligners to gradually shift the teeth into proper alignment. This process creates space and aligns the teeth for a straighter smile. In severe cases, extractions may be necessary to alleviate overcrowding and achieve optimal results.
Can orthodontic treatment prevent future dental problems?
Orthodontic treatment can prevent future dental problems by correcting misalignments that lead to issues like tooth decay, gum disease, and jaw pain. Proper alignment improves oral health, speech, and chewing function, reducing the risk of future complications and enhancing overall well-being. Regular orthodontic care can contribute to a lifetime of healthy smiles.
How often are orthodontic check-ups recommended?
Orthodontic check-ups are typically recommended every 6 to 8 weeks to monitor progress, make adjustments, and ensure treatment is on track. Regular visits are crucial for successful orthodontic treatment outcomes and to address any issues promptly.
Whats involved in an orthodontic consultation?
During an orthodontic consultation, the orthodontist will assess your teeth, jaw, and bite, discuss treatment options like braces or Invisalign, explain the process, and address any concerns. X-rays, photos, and impressions may be taken to create a personalized treatment plan.
How does thumb sucking affect orthodontic health?
Thumb sucking can impact orthodontic health by causing misalignment of teeth, changes in the roof of the mouth, and potential speech issues. Prolonged thumb sucking can lead to bite problems and affect jaw development, potentially requiring orthodontic treatment to correct these issues.
How effective are clear aligners compared to braces?
Clear aligners are highly effective compared to braces, offering comfort, aesthetics, and customized treatment. These advanced aligners apply strategic pressure, requiring fewer office visits. They are a popular choice for teens and adults seeking discreet orthodontic treatment with excellent results.
What dietary changes are needed during orthodontic treatment?
During orthodontic treatment, it's essential to make dietary changes to protect braces or aligners. Avoid hard, sticky, or chewy foods that can damage appliances. Opt for soft foods, cut fruits and vegetables into small pieces, and drink plenty of water. Maintain good oral hygiene by brushing after meals to prevent decay.

Why Choose Invisalign for Your Teen?

Invisalign for teens is a popular choice because it offers a discreet way to straighten teeth without the need for traditional metal braces. The clear aligners are removable, making it easier for teens to maintain good oral hygiene habits throughout treatment.

Additionally, Invisalign allows teens to continue enjoying their favorite foods without restrictions, unlike with braces. The smooth plastic aligners are comfortable to wear and do not cause irritation to the gums and cheeks, making them an ideal option for teens with active lifestyles.

Personalized Treatment Plans for Kids

When it comes to orthodontic treatment for children, our skilled orthodontists create personalized treatment plans tailored to each child's unique needs. We understand that every child is different, and we take the time to ensure that the treatment is effective and comfortable for them.

Whether your child needs braces or Invisalign, we provide comprehensive orthodontic care to help them achieve a beautiful, confident smile. Our goal is to make the orthodontic experience positive and rewarding for kids, setting them up for a lifetime of healthy smiles.
