Life with braces is an adjustment but worth it when you achieve a perfect smile. That smile is yours forever, but in the meantime, there are some ways to make sure everything goes smoothly. By sticking to these general rules, you can ensure treatment is faster, more convenient, and comfortable.

Today’s modern braces are sleeker, more discreet, comfortable, and efficient. Now, you can get fantastic results in much less time than in the past. Plus, the “metal-mouth” look is no longer a problem with clear ceramic braces options. Also, lingual braces are hidden behind the teeth, making it the most discreet choice, even more than Invisalign.

What Foods to Avoid

Let’s get right to the foods best avoided. In some cases, they can be cut up into smaller pieces, such as carrots or apples. However, biting into sticky, hard, crunchy, or chewy foods can be a problem.

Unfortunately, such foods can get stuck in the brackets and loosen wires. Thus, you may need an emergency visit that can be inconvenient and adds needless expense. Not to mention, it can slow down progress.

As always, the idea is to get the best results in the least amount of time.

Foods to Avoid Immediately After Getting Braces

Some foods can be irritating to your mouth in the days after first getting your braces. Foods that are tougher to chew can irritate your mouth as your teeth adjust to braces. Later, they can be added back into your diet if you like.

Foods to avoid at least temporarily:

  • Spicy foods
  • Citrus foods
  • Thick cuts of meat
  • Heavier, thick bread and rolls that aren’t soft

Ice cream:ย Many times, people with new braces enjoy ice cream to help with discomfort and swelling. For others, there may be some time of more sensitivity to cold. Thus, you may want to wait a while and avoid ice cream. Always avoid ice cream that contains nuts or sticky candy toppings. These can stick to wires and brackets.

Foods that Stain Braces

Some foods can stain brackets, particularly clear ones. Some foods that could stain braces:

  • Beets
  • Curry
  • Berries
  • Currants
  • Grape juice

Popular beverages like coffee and tea can also stain braces. So, be sure to rinse with water or mouthwash after if possible. When wearing braces, it’s important to clean after each meal.

Foods to Avoid As Long As You Wear Braces

  • Ice
  • Nuts
  • Chips
  • Popcorn
  • Hard tacos
  • Chewing gum
  • Hard crackers
  • Corn on the cob
  • Hard or sticky candy
  • Apples, carrots, hard veggies
  • Sugary drinks, sodas, excess sweets
  • Tough bread like bagels, pretzels, or pizza crust

As you wear braces, it’s a little trickier to clean your teeth. By avoiding foods like these, you can help avoid the potential for tooth decay.

Of course, you don’t want to feel punished, so an occasional sweet treat is welcome. Just limit those treats to a few times a week if you can.

Plenty of Delicious Options to Choose

Fortunately, there are lots of yummy options so you can enjoy a well-balanced, delicious diet. Before partaking of a particular food, consider if it is soft and easier to chew.

Some delicious options to consider:

  • Soups
  • Seafood
  • Soft fruit
  • Pancakes
  • Muffins
  • Puddings
  • Soft bread
  • Soft cheese
  • Cooked rice
  • Milkshakes
  • Cooked pasta
  • Oats and grains
  • Soft wraps and tortillas
  • Cooked and soft veggies
  • Soft desserts and cakes

As you can see, there are lots of great choices. Over time, you’ll adjust and automatically know which foods to avoid and which ones are your go-to favorites.

Our 5-Star Experience

patient TESTIMONIALS

Courtney L.
I have had 2 children with braces here. I cannot stress enough how wonderful this practice is. Reasonably priced, local, full knowledge, incentives for caring about your teeth and hardware for patients, and every single staff member is kind and sincere. My first just got out of her braces, the staff were very helpful with the very few broken brackets we had throughout the course (36 ish months maybe had 3?), and being a teenager helped her stay compliant and she now has her confidence back. The hardware was well explained and she couldnt be happier herself. My second got hers placed today. I was going to write a big review for after it was done, but then I remembered we will have 2 more coming up and I cant wait that long to express my experience. This child has aspbergers and adhd. As a mom I was nervous and the staff were very loving and it was like nothing was different at all. The staff are well versatile with all types of patients. My second, who learns slower, is already doing the rubber bands by herself hours later (although many visuals and tools were kindly given by the staff, as well as having her do it in person by herself in front of them, thank you for the extra time and patience). The initial consult, Ryan Vanlaecken, made her feel very comfortable and we had no problems at all today. Each doctor at this practice is this way. As many stars as one can possibly give goes to vanlaecken orthodontics. Highly recommend!

I really like VanLaecken Orthodontics in Watertown! Everyone we came in contact with that works there had a smile and seemed genuinely happy. Once the doctor came in, he was quick and thorough while being friendly and hospitable at the same time. He even heard a question I had forgotten to ask him right after I shut the door so he calmly came back in and answered my question without making my child and I feel like we were a bother to him. Definitely somewhere I would recommend anyone! Great hospitality all the way around!
Brandi S.

Life with Braces: Tips for Eating Well

Adjusting to life with braces can be a challenge, but it's important to focus on the positive outcomes that come with achieving a beautiful smile. With modern braces options like clear ceramic or lingual braces, the process is more discreet, comfortable, and efficient than ever before. To ensure that your treatment progresses smoothly and quickly, it's essential to pay attention to your diet and make smart choices when it comes to what you eat.

Avoiding foods that are sticky, hard, crunchy, or chewy is key to preventing potential damage to your braces. Certain foods, such as spicy or citrus foods, thick cuts of meat, and ice cream, should be temporarily avoided to minimize discomfort and prevent complications. By following these guidelines and opting for softer, easier-to-chew options, you can enjoy a well-balanced and delicious diet while maintaining the health of your braces and teeth.
